Chipping In for a Safer Summer
As wildfire season intensifies across California, the Southern Marin Fire District (SMFD) and Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority (MWPA) are reminding residents that proactive vegetation management is one of the most effective ways to protect homes and neighborhoods. This summer, two chipper programs are available to help residents dispose of hazardous vegetation with ease—and for free.
SMFD’s Ongoing Chipper Program: Available Year-Round
SMFD offers a complimentary chipper service year-round, encouraging neighbors to coordinate cleanups and schedule joint pickups to maximize efficiency. From May 15 to June 15 alone, SMFD serviced 41 homes and properties throughout Southern Marin. The program supports defensible space efforts by removing hazardous fuels like brush, limbs, and firewood.

MWPA’s Seasonal Curbside Pickups: Mark Your Calendars
In addition to SMFD’s continuous service, the MWPA offers seasonal chipper pickups in Southern Marin. Upcoming service dates include the weeks of June 7, August 25, and September 29. This curbside program provides chipping and disposal services for residential properties.
Reservations are required—please schedule your pickup before building your pile and no later than the Friday prior to your service week. Sign up for the MWPA Chipper Program here.
Know Before You Pile: What’s Accepted
Both programs accept:
- Tree limbs (up to 8 inches in diameter)
- Brush, shrubs, woody branches
- Broom, juniper, cypress, and firewood
Note: Regular yard waste such as grass clippings, leaves, or bagged materials will not be accepted.
With two ways to chip in, Southern Marin residents have powerful tools at their disposal to reduce wildfire risk. Whether you opt for the year-round flexibility of SMFD’s program or take advantage of MWPA’s scheduled pickups, every branch chipped is a step toward a safer, more resilient community.
