Southern Marin Fire District Announces Oath of Office for Battalion Chief Jon Butler and Captain Manny Avila

Sausalito, CA – August 28, 2025 – The Southern Marin Fire District (SMFD) proudly recognized two significant leadership promotions at its Board of Directors Meeting on Wednesday, August 27. Battalion Chief Jon Butler and Captain Manny Avila were formally administered the oath of office in front of the Board, District leadership, colleagues, and community members.

Jon Butler began his fire service career with the Mill Valley Fire Department in 2013, was promoted to Captain in 2022, and transitioned to SMFD during the Mill Valley annexation in 2023. Known for his steady leadership and dedication to public safety, Butler distinguished himself throughout the promotional process.

“I have full confidence in Jon’s ability to step into this new position with the same integrity, professionalism, and dedication that he has displayed throughout his career,” said Fire Chief Chris Tubbs. “I look forward to seeing his leadership continue to make a meaningful impact across the District.”

Captain Manny Avila’s promotion also followed a highly competitive process that showcased the depth of talent within SMFD. The District expressed gratitude to all candidates who participated for their professionalism, preparation, and commitment to service.
