New Study Highlights Importance of “Zone 0” for Wildfire Safety

A new study from UC Berkeley researchers underscores the critical role of “Zone 0” — the first five feet surrounding a home — in preventing wildfire destruction. By clearing flammable materials such as plants, fences, and debris from this area, homeowners can greatly reduce the risk of flames and embers igniting their homes.

The study analyzed five of California’s most catastrophic wildfires, including the Tubbs, Camp, and Glass Fires, which together destroyed 27,000 structures and claimed 109 lives. Findings showed that while individual efforts matter, wildfire protection works best when entire neighborhoods participate. In dense areas, even well-prepared homes remain at risk if surrounding properties are not maintained.

Research Insights:

  • Homes hardened with fire-resistant materials and surrounded by a five-foot clear Zone 0 were 40% more likely to survive, compared to just 25% without Zone 0.

  • Extending clearance out to 30 feet improved survival to nearly 50%.

  • Zone 0 reduces the spread of fire from house to house, preventing the “disaster sequence” that can overwhelm firefighters.

A statewide regulation is in development to require Zone 0 clearance for homes in high fire-risk areas. Once finalized, new homes will need to comply immediately, while existing homes will have three years to meet the standard.

While some property owners have raised concerns about cost and aesthetics, experts emphasize that the regulation is science-based and essential for community-wide safety. Homeowners are encouraged to seek out grants, insurance discounts, and local resources like FireSafe Councils to help with home hardening and mitigation work.

As one wildfire expert explained, “Every ember that doesn’t catch and every house that doesn’t burn means a firefighter is free to protect another home.”
