Week 3: Build an Emergency Supply Kit
Being prepared means having the right supplies ready before an emergency happens. An emergency kit helps ensure your family—and pets—are ready to evacuate quickly or shelter in place for up to seven days. This week, we’ll share tips and checklists for building a go-bag stocked with food, water, medications, important documents, and other essentials that keep you safe and prepared.
Your emergency kit should include:
- Water (one gallon per person per day).
- Non-perishable food.
- First aid kit and essential medications.
- Flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio.
- Copies of important documents in a waterproof container.
- Pet food and supplies.
Action Steps:
- Build a go-bag for each family member and your pets.
- Keep a smaller version in your car.
- Rotate perishable items like food and batteries every six months.
Tip:
- Add one or two items to your kit each time you shop to spread out costs.
