Opportunity to Serve: Measure U Citizen Oversight Committee Member

Are you a community-minded professional looking for a meaningful way to give back? The Southern Marin Fire Protection District is seeking accomplished residents to serve on its Measure U Citizen Oversight Committee—a distinguished volunteer role that ensures transparency and accountability in the use of public funds dedicated to protecting our community.

Why This Matters

In 2018, voters approved Measure U, a parcel tax designed to provide financial stability for the District. These funds support essential firefighting, lifesaving emergency response services, and enhanced fire-prevention efforts. The Citizen Oversight Committee plays a critical role in safeguarding these resources and reinforcing public trust.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide independent oversight of Measure U expenditures
  • Review and understand governing ordinances, bylaws, and fiscal guidelines
  • Participate in two evening meetings per year (spring & fall) at SMFD headquarters in Sausalito
  • Serve a four-year term, lending your expertise and perspective as a private citizen
  • Collaborate with fellow committee members who reflect the diversity and values of Southern Marin

Who We’re Looking For

  • This prestigious volunteer position is ideal for individuals with a strong sense of civic duty, financial acumen, and a passion for community safety. To qualify, applicants must:
  • Be a resident of the Southern Marin Fire Protection District territory
  • Not hold elected office or be employed by an agency that benefits from the parcel tax
  • Have no economic interest in District projects
  • Comply with conflict-of-interest and disclosure requirements under the Political Reform Act of 1974

The Prestige of Service

This is not a job—it is a distinguished public service appointment. Members gain the opportunity to serve alongside other civic leaders, applying their knowledge and perspective to strengthen one of Marin County’s most respected public safety agencies.
