Fall Prevention Tips to Keep Our Seniors Safe

Post Date:11/19/2025

Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults—but the good news is that most falls are preventable. Here in Southern Marin, our senior community is vibrant, active, and independent. The Southern Marin Fire District encourages residents, families, and caregivers to take simple steps that significantly reduce the risk of falls at home and outdoors.

Staying active is one of the most effective strategies. Regular exercise helps build strength, improve balance, and increase coordination—key components of fall prevention. Even light movement such as daily walks, gentle stretching, or chair exercises can create meaningful improvements. Always check with your doctor to determine which activities are safest for you.

Your home environment also plays a major role in keeping you safe. Clear walkways, hallways, and stairs of clutter, and make sure electrical cords, shoes, and loose items are out of the way. Proper lighting is essential—especially at night. Use night lights in bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways, and ensure staircases have lighting at both the top and bottom. Installing sturdy handrails on both sides of stairs can also provide critical support.

Bathrooms are another area where many falls occur. Use non-slip mats in and around the shower and bathtub, and install grab bars near the toilet and bathing areas. Clean up spilled liquids right away, and be mindful of uneven flooring, throw rugs, and transitions between rooms. Outdoors, take caution on uneven sidewalks, steps, and pathways, especially during wet or cold weather.

Medications can also impact balance. Keep an up-to-date list of your prescriptions and review it regularly with your healthcare provider. Some medications—or combinations of them—may cause dizziness or drowsiness.

Lastly, taking your time is one of the simplest but most effective tools for safety. Rise slowly from chairs or your bed, pause to get your balance, and stay aware of your surroundings. A medical alert system can also offer peace of mind, providing quick access to emergency help at the push of a button.

By making small adjustments and staying mindful, Southern Marin seniors can continue enjoying independence safely and confidently.
