Vehicle Recovery Assist – Highway 37

Post Date:03/16/2026

On Thursday, March 12, Southern Marin Fire District crews responded to a request for assistance on Highway 37 near Lakeville Highway in Petaluma after a vehicle left the roadway and entered the water. The incident was initially handled by Novato Fire, and the driver was able to safely self-extricate from the vehicle.

Although there were no injuries, the partially submerged vehicle created a traffic hazard and safety concern for passing motorists. Due to SMFD’s strong working relationship with the California Highway Patrol, CHP requested assistance from Southern Marin Fire’s dive team to help secure and retrieve the vehicle.

SMFD personnel responded to the scene and worked with partner agencies to safely hook and remove the submerged vehicle from the water, helping restore safe conditions along the highway. In total, six units and 14 personnel participated in the response, with the incident beginning at approximately 10:31 AM and concluding early that afternoon.
This response highlights the value of interagency cooperation and the specialized capabilities regional partners bring to complex incidents across Marin and Sonoma counties.

A reminder for motorists: when approaching an emergency scene on the roadway, slow down, stay alert, and move over whenever possible. Giving first responders space to work helps keep everyone safe—including firefighters, law enforcement, tow operators, and the traveling public.
