Community Shows Up Strong for Wildfire Preparedness Forum

Post Date:05/04/2026

A strong turnout of residents, fire professionals, and partner agencies filled the room on May 2 for Marin’s Wildfire Preparedness Public Forum, a collaborative event focused on education, engagement, and action.

Hosted by Marin Wildfire in partnership with Fire Safe Marin and local agencies, including Southern Marin Fire District, the forum brought the community together at a critical time as Marin updates its Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). The purpose of a CWPP is to provide a science-based assessment of wildfire hazards and threats to homes in the wildland urban interface (WUI) of Marin County.

The morning began with opening remarks from MWPA Board President and SMFD Director Hilliard, setting a clear tone around shared responsibility and the importance of community participation. Attendees heard from wildfire experts and regional leaders, gaining insight into evolving fire risk, prevention strategies, and coordinated efforts underway across Marin.

The energy in the room reflected a community ready to engage. A large and attentive audience underscored the growing awareness and urgency surrounding wildfire preparedness.

Following the main presentation, the event shifted into a more interactive format. Breakout Q and A discussions allowed residents to connect directly with fire professionals and subject matter experts, ask questions specific to their neighborhoods, and better understand how to take action at home.

Around the room, agency booths and resource tables created opportunities for one-on-one conversations. Representatives from multiple jurisdictions collaborated side by side, including neighboring fire districts, Fire Safe Marin, and seasonal staff, reinforcing the regional approach required to reduce wildfire risk.

From defensible space and home hardening to evacuation planning and vegetation management, the forum emphasized practical, actionable steps residents can take now.

The message was consistent throughout the event. Wildfire preparedness is not a one-time effort. It is an ongoing, community-driven process that depends on informed residents and coordinated action.
