Fire-Resistant Vents: A Simple Upgrade That Can Help Protect Your Home

Post Date:06/11/2026

As wildfire season approaches, Southern Marin Fire District encourages residents to take proactive steps to harden their homes against wildfire. One of the most effective and affordable upgrades homeowners can make is installing fire-resistant vents.

During a wildfire, wind-driven embers can travel miles ahead of the main fire and enter homes through attic, foundation, and crawl space vents. Once inside, these embers can ignite combustible materials, causing a fire to start from within the structure. According to Fire Safe Marin, ember intrusion is one of the leading causes of home loss during wildfires.

Fire-resistant vents are specifically designed to reduce the risk of ember entry while still allowing proper airflow. Some models use fine metal mesh, while others incorporate advanced materials that expand when exposed to high heat, helping block flames and embers from entering the home.

The good news is that upgrading your vents can be a relatively inexpensive project with a significant safety benefit. It is one of several home-hardening measures that can improve your home's ability to withstand a wildfire.
