Grill Safety: Prevent Fires Before They Start

Post Date:06/11/2026

Summer is grilling season, but it’s also a time when preventable fires can occur. According to fire safety experts, the leading causes of grill fires are failing to properly clean the grill and placing it too close to materials that can catch fire.

Grease buildup, food debris, and accumulated residue can ignite unexpectedly, while grills placed near siding, decks, railings, fences, or overhanging vegetation can quickly spread fire to a home or surrounding property.

Before you fire up the grill, take a few simple precautions:

Grill Safety Tips

• Clean your grill regularly to remove grease and food buildup.
• Keep grills at least 10 feet away from homes, decks, fences, and vegetation.
• Never leave a grill unattended while cooking.
• Check gas connections for leaks before use.
• Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grilling area.
• Open the grill lid before lighting a gas grill.
• Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it.
• Allow coals and ashes to cool completely before disposal.

A few minutes of preparation can help prevent injuries, property damage, and wildfire ignition.
