Southern Marin residents and visitors should prepare for significant traffic impacts throughout the Sausalito area on Saturday, July 4, as Independence Day celebrations, fireworks displays, and roadway closures are expected to draw large crowds.

The Sausalito Police Department, in coordination with regional transportation and public safety agencies, is advising motorists to plan ahead and allow extra travel time throughout the day and evening.

A major traffic impact will occur from approximately 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., when southbound US-101 access to the Golden Gate Bridge will be closed. During this period, southbound traffic will not be able to access the bridge through Sausalito, including the Marin City/Sausalito exit and other southbound exits approaching the bridge. Northbound US-101 will remain open.

To ensure the safety of the traveling public, Caltrans will be closing US-101 in both directions starting at 8 p.m. Crews will be closing the Northbound US-101 off-ramp at Lincoln Boulevard in San Francisco, the Southbound US-101 off-ramp at Spencer Avenue in Marin County, the Northbound US-101 on-and off-ramps at Girard Street in San Francisco, the Northbound US-101/State Route 1 (SR-1) interchange off-ramp, and SR-1 at Lake Street.

Residents should also anticipate increased congestion related to the Sausalito Independence Day Parade, waterfront festivities, and two fireworks displays scheduled for the evening.

To reduce delays, officials recommend:

• Arriving early and limiting unnecessary travel throughout the day.
• Using Golden Gate Ferry service whenever possible.
• Taking public transit from Marin City or surrounding communities.
• Parking once and walking to events.
• Allowing extra time for emergency and non-emergency travel.

Southern Marin Fire District reminds residents to keep emergency access routes clear and to be mindful of emergency vehicles responding throughout the holiday. If you see emergency apparatus with lights and sirens activated, safely move to the right and stop until they have passed.
