As residents and visitors gather to celebrate Independence Day, Southern Marin Fire District reminds everyone to make water safety a priority. Thousands of people are expected to enjoy the holiday from boats, kayaks, paddleboards, ferries, and waterfront locations throughout Richardson Bay, San Francisco Bay, and the Sausalito shoreline.

The Fourth of July is one of the busiest days of the year on local waterways. Popular fireworks displays in Sausalito and along the San Francisco waterfront attract large numbers of recreational boaters and spectators seeking a unique view of the celebration. While the experience can be memorable, crowded waterways, limited visibility after dark, strong currents, and increased vessel traffic create additional risks for everyone on the water.

Before heading out, ensure your vessel is equipped with all required safety equipment and that every passenger has access to a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Operators should travel at safe speeds, maintain a constant lookout for other boats, kayakers, paddleboarders, swimmers, and floating debris, and remain alert to changing conditions throughout the day.

If you plan to watch the fireworks from the water, arrive early and identify a safe location to anchor or observe the display. Carry a charged cell phone or marine radio, let someone know your plans, and check weather and marine forecasts before departing. Never operate a vessel under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Following the fireworks, waterways often become highly congested as boats return to docks and marinas. Use navigation lights, proceed slowly, and exercise patience and courtesy around other vessels.

A little preparation and awareness can help ensure a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July for everyone enjoying the Bay.
