Proper Battery Disposal Helps Prevent Fires

This past Monday, Southern Marin Fire District crews responded to a report of a commercial vehicle fire involving a garbage truck. The driver noticed smoke coming from the truck's trash compartment and quickly pulled into Fire Station 7 for assistance. Fortunately, SMFD personnel found no active fire, but the incident serves as an important reminder about the dangers of improperly disposed lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries are commonly found in phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, toys, and other rechargeable devices. When damaged, crushed, or exposed to heat, these batteries can ignite and cause fires in garbage trucks, recycling facilities, and landfills.

To help prevent fires:
• Never place lithium-ion batteries in trash or recycling bins
• Tape battery terminals before transport
• Take batteries to an approved recycling or household hazardous waste facility
