Southern Marin Fire District proudly congratulates Fire Captain/Paramedics Robert Grady and Michael Coleman on receiving the prestigious California Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) Life Saving Award. During the June meeting of the Southern Marin Fire District Board of Directors, both members were presented with official proclamations recognizing their extraordinary courage, exceptional professionalism, and unwavering commitment to preserving life.

On February 20, 2025, while vacationing with their families, Captains Grady and Coleman witnessed a catastrophic gas grill explosion that caused multiple traumatic injuries and created an immediate threat to public safety. Without hesitation, both firefighters left the safety of their families and rushed to aid numerous victims suffering from severe burns, traumatic injuries, significant blood loss, fractures, and respiratory compromise. They provided lifesaving medical care, controlled life-threatening hemorrhages, stabilized critically injured patients, and remained on scene assisting victims until local emergency responders arrived. Recognizing an ongoing hazard, they also helped ensure the damaged gas supply was shut off, reducing the risk of additional explosions and further casualties.

Their actions exemplify the highest ideals of the fire service—courage, compassion, professionalism, and selfless service. Even while off duty, Captains Grady and Coleman demonstrated the unwavering commitment to protecting life that defines the members of Southern Marin Fire District.
