A defensible space inspection is an annual review of a property, conducted by a fire official in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). It incorporates the zones within a 100-150 foot defensible space model for reducing combustibles & vegetation. These inspections can lead to enforcement actions in order to meet the current WUI Ordinance of SMFD and WUI Ordinance of the City of Mill Valley. 

A home property assessment is an inspection is provided on a strictly request bases from a property owner or resident. It is conducted by a fire official in both the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) and area adjacent to the WUI. It incorporates a review of the defensible space model for reducing combustibles & vegetation around the home. These assessments can provide education and actionable items in order to meet the current WUI Ordinance of SMFD and WUI Ordinance of the City of Mill Valley. 

A hazard inspection is conducted by a fire official upon notification of a potential hazard in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). These inspections can lead to enforcement actions in order to meet the current WUI Ordinance of SMFD and WUI Ordinance of the City of Mill Valley. 

A fire system inspection, within a commercial property, is a dedicated inspection reviewing the testing and maintenance of a fire alarm and/or sprinkler system. These fire systems are considered fire suppression and notification devices. It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure these systems are maintained at all times. These inspections can lead to enforcement actions or the implementation of a fire watch, when systems are found out of service or in disrepair.

 COMMERCIAL FIRE SPRINKLERS & ALARMS:

To prepare for a successful annual inspection, all testing records of of the fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems are required to be provided to the District for review prior to final inspection. This can be done by providing the fire contractors with the SMFD Requirement Letter that will guide them on the submission process. Please send a copy of this letter to all fire system contractors involved with the property.

Commercial buildings all have a specific "occupancy" based on the intended use. The occupancy compliance inspections are conducted to ensure the building is being used for the type of occupancy it is rated. These inspection can lead to enforcement actions.

A temporary membrane structure is most commonly seen as a tent like structure, erected for special events or protection from the elements. These are required to be reviewed in a planning processes as well as inspected for safe installation and compliance with the SMFD Tent standard. The fees for these permits and inspections are included in the SMFD Fire Fee Schedule.
